Quotes from Past Stars!

Selene Duran - age 17, singer, actress, dancer, co-captain of the Taos High School Dance Team

What does Stars mean to you?

"Stars means opportunity to me. It means I can be myself and connect with others over our love for the arts. I love acting and singing - it’s a great pleasure in my life. To participate in Stars and sing - it’s my greatest joy! Stars also means that I can meet other people who have similar interests and are so talented. Whether it’s acting, poetry, singing or musical instruments, everyone’s unique talents make the show special! Stars provides so many ages opportunities to show themselves to the world. My dream is to be an actress eventually and Stars is that gateway for me. I can experiment on many things and get great advice from the judges. It’s just so fun!"

What does it feel like when the curtain closes?
"When the curtain closes, there are so many emotions felt. It’s bittersweet because I’m sad that it’s over, but I’m also happy because I went out there. It’s different standing behind the curtain, feeling anxious over your performance and wanting to disappear. Additionally, when you’re behind the curtain after performing, you feel a sense of accomplishment and relief. If you feel good enough, sometimes you want to go for an encore! The curtain is like a little safety blanket and it feels really nice to return to it after you did your best."

After you perform, what do you learn from this experience?
"After I perform, I feel accomplished and proud that I went out there and gave it all I could. I like to ask fellow performers or audience members how my performance was, and then I can learn how to improve. Also it’s fun to hear about where you did good because then it inspires you to do it again! After I perform, I go home and have the biggest smile ever. I feel proud of myself and my talent. I like to watch the videos of me performing - after I get over the fear of watching myself! Feeling satisfied after performing is the greatest feeling."

Jimena Ballesteros - age 21, ARTSOUL board member, singer, host, and mentor

"Stars is one of the places where I've truly felt like my authentic self. Thanks to this amazing talent show, I've discovered more about who I am and the kind of performer I want to be, and for that, I couldn't be more grateful. After the curtain closes, it's bittersweet. A sense of victory takes over you, making you feel good because you hit that high note or didn't forget that one verse. But at the same time, you know it's over until the next time you get to feel that rush of performing in front of so many people.

The lesson I've learned from performing is that music, dance, singing, and any artistic or creative medium can connect you to people or help people connect to themselves. Nothing is greater than feeling connected to someone, something, or even yourself, and Stars allows us to find that connection."

Anastacia Santistevan - age 14, dancer, actress, singer, and host

"Night of 1,000 Stars means so much to me because it has offered me so many opportunities to show what I love to do, and also meet some of the most talented and cool people ever! When the curtain closes after a performance with Night of a 1,000 Stars it feels really amazing - knowing that you could perform for a bunch of people and for loved ones, and it feels pretty fulfilling and everyone is so supportive...

I learned so much from Night of 1,000 Stars and from Cindy on how to be more comfortable performing, and truly being

yourself and your best self. I love the community I have made being on Night of 1,000 Stars over the past few years and I hope many others get to also."

Emma Atkinson - age 15, singer, pianist, and composer

"Stars means people who are willing to face the challenge of getting on stage and connecting with the audience. When the curtain closes, it's a wave of adrenaline because of accomplishing performing in front of a bunch of people. After I perform I learn that it's important to do things that push you out of your comfort zone and I'm always glad I did it."

Sarai Romero - age 15, singer, plays vihuela and violin in Taos High School Mariachi El Tigre Band

"What Stars is to me is a show where I get to see and experience so many different acts and meet amazing people every time I host for the show. This is why I love Night of a 1,000 Stars. I learned how to host and how to help manage a backstage crew to get everyone ready for their performance. It's a great experience every time."
